Our classic winter courses begin January 17 and you can choose to study from two weeks up to 15 weeks. Avalanche and glacier rescue course
Every year at the beginning of the semester, internationally certified UIAGM mountain guide Pelle Bagewitz holds an avalanche and glacier seminar at the school. The first piece of good news is that if you live in France and pay French taxes your course could be subsidized up to 100% by the government through Formation Professionnelle.

What is formation professionnelle?

Formation professionnelle enables you to use grants from the French government to pay for your language studies. Languages courses in Chamonix are a high priority and could be subsidised up to 100%.

Who can apply and what is needed?

Grants are available to any person of any profession who pays taxes in France. Typically, a self-employed person or company owner has 800€ to 1000€ in training grants available each year to use towards language studies. Employees are eligible from 400€ to 2000€ for a course.

Application procedure

Insted can assist you with the application process. Contact us for assistance.

The application process takes four to six weeks, so we advise you to send in the application at least 30 days before the start of the course.

The second piece of good news is that now with newly renovated offices, Insted is proud to offer out our Conference Room facilities for meetings, conferences, seminars, workshops - whatever your needs. There are three conference/classrooms with wifi access that can each cater up to 30-38 delegates. Our conference rooms include whiteboards, laptop projector, overhead projectors, DVD, VHS video, TV, printers, fax, scanner and copy machines. The facilities also hold a reception and a lounge area with self-service coffee/tea and a small kitchenette.

Hike & Study in the alps

Choose from the lower valley trails for the wonderful forest scents or gain altitude and taste the blueberries, admire the fantastic panoramas and test your stamina.
The Grand Balcon Sud facing the Mont-Blanc offers a magnificant hike along a natural terrace. Take the Flegere or Brevent cable cars and take in the scenery in a 2hr hike. Or ride the Aiguille du Midi the cable car to an altitude of 3842m (12,680ft) and descend by cable car back to the mid-station at the Plan d’Aiguille and then walk the steep, zig-zag, wooded track back down to Chamonix (3hrs ) along the Grand Balcon North or cross over from the Plan d'Aiguille to the Montenvers train station (3 hrs) to take the tourist train back down to Chamonix.  Tempted by a sea of ice, the Lac Blanc (2352m) hike is a great place to enjoy the view of the Mont Blanc. From the Flegere / Index lift, the hike is a bit under 2 hours. Take a packed lunch and enjoy a picnic in this stunning setting. For the more adventurous hiker the Tour of Mont Blanc is a famous circumnavigation of the Mont Blanc massif: hiking through Italy, Switzerland and France - 3 different countries, cultures and food! - 8 to 10 days. Or the Haute Route - Chamonix to Zermatt via mountain huts and valley hotels follows a historical path.

Climb & Study this Summer

Chamonix's superb granite attracts climbers from the world over. First-class mountain and climbing routes, grandeous north faces and accessible boulders. Combine this with an undertaking of French language at Insted’s language school in France and you have an adventure holiday of a lifetime dripping with the immersions of French living.

With some 27 principal climbing sites from Albertville, a short train or car ride away to beyond Vallorcine, accessible by train – Chamonix well caters to all. The Gaillands rocks are located just 2km south of Chamonix, next to the Gaillands lake and offer a wide variety of easy to more difficult routes. Bouldering at the Col des Montets is an easy 10 km from Chamonix, over the Col and just before Vallorcine. The Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve in this valley offers ideal bouldering terrain with different sized granite blocs for climbing with and without ropes.  For the experienced climbers the 4013m Dent du Geant is a fine rock spire on the frontier ridge between France and Italy. The normal route is on rock (AD) and is in a tremendous situation overlooking the Mer de Glace and the Val d'Aosta. While the Forbes Arete on the Aiguille due Chardonnet is one of the best known ridges in the Mont Blanc Massif and it is justifiably popular. An interesting and quite steep snow climb leads to the knife-edge snow arête which continues to the summit in a breath-taking situation. For the more classic climber, the Mer de Glace Face of the 3482m Aiguille du Grepon offers a longer good quality traverse across the neighbouring Grands Charmoz. The options continue with a good commencement to ice climbing at La Tour ronde, a short steep north face route at just 55 degrees! Arguably the most famous rock peak is Le Petit Dru which offers a difficult and satisfying ascent for a fit team.

MTB & Study in Chamonix

With over 2000m of rideable vertical ranges, 6 lift systems in a 15-mile long valley, Chamonix, France offers an abundance of awesome riding terrain for the intrepid mountain biker. With a range of trails and descents Chamonix caters for beginners to the more experienced riders. The mellow jeep trails like the Grand Balcon Sud between Brévent and Flégère are perfect for those looking for some excitement but don’t have as much experience behind the handlebars. Then, of course, there are miles and miles of steep, technical single track to satisfy the hungers of even the most hardcore downhillers. Trails like the Bel Achat descending from the top of Brévent, offering a steep descent punctuated with what seems like hundreds of tight switchbacks and plenty of air below just to keep things interesting. One imagines there is an incredible level of commitment and desire in achieving such goals and we are curious as to the sorts of challenges your Insted course offered?
“The insted course was able to place me in a course that suited my level and was able to challenge my french and keep me on my toes. The environment was motivating and the teachers were very friendly and if you wanted to do more studies they gave you options for that as well.”

Well-connected to the Chamonix valley and geared with a more than ample knowledge of the big mountains and local Chamonix network, we know that you are no beginner in the valley - but when you arrived you would have initially been exposed to the same sorts of questions every newcomer to the valley has : accommodation, ski passes, gear!!! What do you recall as their biggest single tip offered to you to help you through this time?

You have just been invited to join Chris Davenport and your husband Stian Hagen on their ski expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula. This trip is very unique, you will be sailing a 75ft boat from Ushaia to the Antarctic peninsula, to explore this untouched coastal mountain range with the plan to push the boundaries of ski alpinism where very little documentation of skiing has been done on this 600 mile chain of mountains. The expedition will be documented by 3 filmers, HD video and 16mm and 1 photographer Greg Von Doersten to produce a feature length ski documentary. In preparation for this, you have been doing some bigger routes climbing in the mountains and lots of hiking and some skiing. Can you tell us what your most ideal day in the mountains in Chamonix is in Dec or January and how you would spend an avid powder day in the Chamonix valley?
“In the pre season when there is not so much snow in Chamonix and this can happen in December, I do a lot of hiking up to the lifts and take the lift down, I also do a lot of dry land training to get a good strength base for the winter. When it does snow enough I am out there ski touring and skiing as much as I can.”
